2.1 Historical Statistics of Japan (Nihon Choki Tokei Soran) (5 volumes, Japan Statistical Association, 1987-1988, ¥103,005 (set price)) (Bilingual)

This publication provides time-series statistical data, with a collection of a wide variety of statistics issued between 1868 and the 1980s. In principle, data released by the government and other public agencies are used. Volume I contains statistical data on land, population and labor, Volumes II to IV deal with economic statistics, and Volume V is concerned with social and cultural information. In total, statistics from 26 fields are contained.

At the beginning of each section, there is a detailed explanation giving the outline, background and history of the survey on which statistics are based, as well as its respondents, survey items and definition of terms. In addition, the Japanese statistical system is summarized in Volume I, and an index by keywords covering all the volumes is included in Volume V.

With coverage over this long period of time and its highly comprehensive index, Historical Statistics of Japan should be the first source to consult if you need to study statistics from the pre-war period.

In comparison with the paper-form publication, the coverage of time period and subjects of statistics of the website have been extended and enriched in response to recent changes in the social and economic situation. The statistics on the website cover a time range over a period of 135 years from 1868 to 2002 and 31 subject fields.

In addition, for users' convenience, new chapters of "gender" and "information technology" have been formed which are increasingly considered important with relevant statistics selected in these fields.

This is a compilation of some 140 selected indices of the Japanese economy, with a focus on finance, collected between 1868 and 1965. Each statistical table has a data source as well as a note for users.In the last 200 pages, such useful information as economic background and changes in economic systems is given by category for the benefit of statistics users. This publication is characterized by a fund of statistics prepared by the Bank of Japan, and includes detailed data on major accounts of financial institutions.Annual rates of major economic indices are included in the Appendix.

A group of economists has processed a wealth of statistical data accumulated since the Meiji Era, and by adding estimated figures, compiled them into long-term statistics. This is not a mere accumulation of old statistical data. They created new statistics which can track the economic development of Japan by means of data processing and estimation.

The 14 volumes of the publication cover the following areas: national income, labor, capital stock, capital formation, savings and currency, personal consumption expenditure, government expenditure, prices, agriculture and forestry, mining and manufacturing, textile industry, railway and electricity, regional economic statistics, and foreign trade and balance of payments.
