This report is an edited collection of a wide range of monthly and quarterly statistics released by ministries and agencies. With about 4,000 statistical series, it enables readers to scrutinize economic and social trends from a comprehensive perspective. Each series, with some exceptions, contains yearly figures for the past seven years and monthly figures for the past 12 months. No index is included.In recent years, data analyses are usually inserted only in the April issue. The first issue was published in 1961. 3.1.2 Japan Statistical Yearbook (Nihon Tokei Nenkan)(edited by Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, issued by Japan Statistical Association and others, annual, ¥14,000) (Bilingual)

This is a comprehensive statistical report containing fundamental information on Japan in a wide range of fields, including land, population, economy, society and culture. It has about 670 statistical tables and is divided into chapters according to field.At the beginning of each chapter, a brief explanation of the statistics contained in the chapter is given. It explains the types of statistics, data sources, survey methods, survey backgrounds, coverage, technical terms, etc. At the end of this yearbook, a list of statistics by publisher is included, as well as both Japanese and English indices corresponding to about 5,000 keywords.

This yearbook dates back to 1872, when "Shinmi Administration Tables" was published.It was revised in 1882 as the "Statistical Yearbook of the Empire of Japan" which continued to be published until 1941 when the 59thedition was issued. After publication was suspended in the Second World War, the "Japan Statistical Yearbook" was launched in 1949. The 53rdissue was published in 2004.

With regard to the "Statistical Yearbook of the Empire of Japan, " copies of all the 59 editions are available at Toyo Shorin (¥28,000 for the 1stto 46theditions, ¥18,000 for the 47thto 59theditions).

3.1.3 Japan Almanac(Asahi Shimbun, Annual, ¥1,900) (Bilingual)

Various data on Japan are concisely compiled into this almanac, which consists of four chapters; "Land and Politics", "Economy and Industry", "Society and Life" and "Culture and Leisure". More than 600 data items are grouped under 50 headings, and changes and composition of data are clearly shown by use of a large number of graphs. The extensive use of statistics prepared by private organizations is also a feature of this publication. Telephone numbers and URLs of related organizations are listed in each section.

Indices by English and Japanese keywords are included, and a chronological table of Japanese history is attached. The first edition was published in 1993.

3.1.4 Social Indicators by Prefecture (Shakai Seikatsu Tokei Shihyo: Todohuken no Shihyo)(edited by Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, issued by Japan Statistical Association, annual, ¥6,000) (Bilingual)

From the statistical indicators included in the social and population statistical system maintained in Japan (systematically edited collection of approximately 4,200 statistical data by area, reflecting the life of the people, on population and households, natural environment, education, labor, health and medical care, welfare and social security, etc.), major prefectural data consisting of about 600 items are extracted and compiled into this publication. Emphasis is placed on statistics in the social field, such as security and education, rather than on those in the economic and industrial fields.

The publication is composed of three chapters. While unprocessed data are shown in "II. Basic", processed indicators such as those in percentage terms are included in "I. Social Indicators" to facilitate comparison."III. Explanation of Basic Data" includes data sources, survey outlines and definition of terms.

The first edition was published in 1977. An index by keywords is included at the back.

The latest issue is included in Shakai Seikatsu Tokei Shiryo外部サイトへのリンク on the Website of the Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. Note, however, that you have to visit the table of contents written in Japanese first to access the data.

3.1.5 Financial and Economic Statistics Monthly(Bank of Japan, annual, annual subscription fee Z¥8,400) (Bilingual)

This is a monthly statistics report which began to publication in July 2005 as a new version of the "Financial and Economic Statistics Monthly". It is a handy statistics report that grasps the recent business trends, with an expansion of the contents of the "Bank of Japan Statistics" and "Key Statistics" in the former "Financial and Economic Statistics Monthly". Each set of statistics has a slightly different period of record, but mostly they are 20-year statistics, the quarterly statistics of the latest one and a half years, and the monthly statistics of the previous 14 months.

3.1.6 Bank of Japan Statistics (Bank of Japan, annual, annual subscription fee ¥4,120)(Bilingual)

This is a quarterly statistics report, reorganized from the former "Financial and Economic Statistics Monthly" in 2005. It has the major statistics which were published in the statistics of the Bank of Japan located on the Bank of Japan's website, and they are mainly long-term data. In addition to the 13 categories with a focus on finance, it has in every issue, the "special tables" which contain more detailed data such as "Amounts Outstanding of Deposits by Depositor (by Rank of Amounts and by Detailed Depositor)" and "Deposits by Prefecture (Domestically Licensed Banks)". In addition, at the end there are some "notes" ("General Notes", "Notes to Individual Statistics", "Explanations and Reference for Individual Statistics", "Information about Seasonal Adjustment").

3.1.7 Nippon: Business Facts & Figures (World Economic Information Services, annual, ¥1,200) (Bilingual)

This publication describes such areas as "National Economy", "Industry", "Life", etc. using charts, tables and statistics. Because each topic is shown in a double-page spread, readers can easily compare data for the past several years as well as every other country's data of the same year. The publication focuses on statistical figures related to international relations, such as international comparison of prices, number of foreign students, foreign labor, data on overseas travel, etc. No index is included.
