5.1.1 Population Census of Japan (Kokusei Chosa Hokoku) (edited by Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, issued by Japan Statistical Association, every 5 years, each volume about ¥5,000) (Bilingual)

This is a report on a national survey carried out every five years in order to ascertain Japan's actual population. It is the most fundamental report among a great many population statistics, and is widely used for various purposes, including administrative measures and area marketing.

A full-scale census and a short one are conducted every five years alternately, on all the people residing in Japan at the time of the census.Survey items include basic attributes of population (age, sex, etc), economic attributes (industry, occupation, etc.) and housing conditions. In the full-scale census, more detailed items, such as migration, education, transportation to the place of work or school, are added. In addition to "Total Population", a wide variety of survey results are published; "Sex, Age, and Marital Status of Population, Structure and Housing Conditions of Households", "Labor Force Status of Population, Industry of Employed Persons, and Education", "Population by Place of Work or Schooling", "Population on Internal Migration", etc.More than 300 publications are issued in total.

This site is located on the Website of Statistics Bureau, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

In the period between the Population Censuses conducted every five years, population estimates are compiled to keep track of the monthly and yearly status of the population. Based on the population figures obtained from the Population Census, population trends are estimated using other population-related statistics (Vital Statistics of Japan, Internal Migration in Japan Derived from the Basic Resident Registers, etc.), and population figures as of the first day of every month are calculated. The information provided on this site includes population by prefecture, population by age bracket, population pyramids, and so on.

This is an annual report on a statistical survey conducted to track population trends by looking at five factors; live births, deaths, marriages, divorces and fetal deaths.

There is a site titled Vital Statistics外部サイトへのリンク on the Website of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Although the site provides only a summary of the survey results, it includes some information, such as Life Tables, unavailable in the publication.
