たとえば、1945年4月7日の戦艦大和攻撃の報告については、Action Report: U.S.S. Bataan (CVL-29), 14 March to 29 May, 1945（航空母艦バターンの戦闘報告書, Reel 16CC 収録）、Action Report: Air Group Eighty Three Abroad U.S.S. Essex: Support of occupation of Okinawa, 14 March　- 1 June, 1945（航空母艦エセックス艦載機の83飛行隊の報告書, Reel 16EE 収録）などに含まれている。
また、この資料群に含まれる艦載機、地上機の戦闘報告書（Aircraft Action Report）は、XII. Tactical and Operational Dataのみを集めて合衆国艦隊司令長官宛てに報告したもので、米国戦略爆撃調査団文書で欠落しているものを含んでいる。

歴史
米太平洋艦隊司令長官兼太平洋地域司令官ニミッツは、沖縄戦（アイスバーグ作戦）のために、第5艦隊司令長官スプルアンス（Raymond A. Spruance）を司令官とする米軍の陸軍・海軍・海兵隊の部隊と英海軍太平洋艦隊の部隊からなる中部太平洋特命部隊（Central Pacific Task Forces）を編制した。中部太平洋特命部隊の下には、沖縄侵攻を支援するため偵察、日本の航空戦力の無力化を任務とする海軍の援護軍・特別部隊（Covering Forces and Special Groups（Task Force 50））と上陸戦・地上戦を任務とする陸軍・海軍・海兵隊の部隊から成る合同派遣軍（Joint Expeditionary Force（Task Force 51））を設置した。（組織図　PDFファイル　61KB）
さらにTask Force 50の隷下には第1高速空母軍（Fast Carrier Force（Task Force 58））と英空母軍（British Carrier Force（Task Force 57））が置かれた。第1高速空母軍は、1945年3月18日以降、九州、3月19日には神戸、呉、3月23日以降、上陸戦・地上戦を援護するための沖縄の爆撃を行い、4月7日には日本の第2艦隊を攻撃し、戦艦大和を撃沈した。英空母軍は、4月5日以降、石垣島・宮古島をはじめとする先島諸島への爆撃を行った。
Task Force51の隷下には、上陸戦・地上戦を任務とする陸軍の第24軍団と海兵隊の第3上陸戦軍団を主体とする陸軍第10軍により編制された派遣部隊（Expeditionary Troops）（Task Force 56）、上陸・地上戦支援のため、護衛空母、小型砲艦・迫撃砲隊、掃海艇、上陸する浜辺の妨害物の偵察・除去を任務とする水中妨害物破壊班などから成る上陸戦支援軍（Amphibious Support Force (Task Force 52)、戦艦、軽・重巡洋艦、駆逐艦、駆逐艦護衛艦から成る砲撃・援護軍（Gunfire and Covering Force (Task Force 54)、北部攻撃軍（Northern Attack Force (Task Force 53））、南部攻撃軍（Southern Attack Force (Task Force 55））などが置かれた。
3月24日に上陸戦支援軍の掃海艇が慶良間諸島への水路の掃海を開始し、3月26日には第10軍隷下の第77歩兵師団が慶良間諸島への攻撃を開始し、アイスバーグ作戦の決行日である4月1日には第3上陸戦軍団と第24軍団が沖縄本島に上陸した。6月27日戦闘は終結した。
