How to Search for Library Materials at the National Diet Library

This search guides explains how to search for library materials at the National Diet Library (NDL) by content when the title is unknown.Please also refer to the search guide How to Search for Library Materials at the National Diet Library via the Internet.

1.Searching via the internet

The following databases are available online via the NDL website:

 

The following databases are available from institutions other than the NDL.

    • Aozora Bunko外部サイトへのリンク
      Search the full texts of works for which copyright protection has expired.
    • Publishers websites
      Newly published materials are sometimes available on the publisher's website. Publications from government agencies and other public institutions are often available on the internet.

      Search bibliographic information of the library's holdings.
    • Cinii Articles外部サイトへのリンクNational Institute of Informatics Cinii Articles (https://ci.nii.ac.jp/en)*
      Search bibliographic information on academic articles. Full-text versions of some articles are available free of charge to all users, while some are only available for a fee to registered users.
    • Japan Science and Technology Agency (J-STAGE)外部サイトへのリンク (https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/browse/-char/en)*
      A platform for publication of electronic journals on science and technology, including  conference proceedings, JST reports, and other scholarly articles, many of which are available free of charge.

      Search articles from academic journals.

      Search the full text of books and magazines, many of which are available in part or in full and free of charge.

      Search the table of contents of recently published magazines.

      This is a hybrid online book store that enables users to search for books in both brick-and-mortar as well as online book stores.

2.Searching via premium databases

There are many premium databases that enable users to search for articles from journals and magazines, sometimes offering full text online. The NDL provides access to a number of premium databases from computer terminals on the premises, including databases of national newspapers and magazines published in foreign countries. Many public libraries also offer access to premium databases.

 

3.Copying tables of contents

If you cannot visit the NDL, you can requests copies of the table of contents to a particular library material via the NDL's Remote Photoduplication service.

 

4.Using reference services at a nearby library

If you cannot find the information you need via the internet, we recommend that you visit a nearby library to ask a reference librarian for help.

Reference librarians can help you find the materials you need as well as borrow books from other libraries.

If a reference librarian cannot find the material you are looking for, they can ask the NDL for help via our online reference service. So please consult at a nearby library first when you would like to know more about the content of materials at the NDL.

Please understand that the NDL cannot accept questions about the content of library material by telephone, since materials are stored in the closed stacks.

The Collaborative Reference Database is an archive of past reference queries and responses handled by NDL as well other public and university libraries that can been searched via the internet.

 

5.Article Research service

The Article Research service is for patrons who know the title of the article or thesis they want copied but are unable to submit a request for Remote Photoduplication services, because they don't know which issue of the periodical it is in.

Responses to article research requests can be reviewed via the NDL Online and used to complete a request for remote photoduplication.

Article Research service is available only to registered users and cannot be requested from computer terminals on the premises at the NDL. Please see the help page of the National Diet Library Online for details.
