Main databases offered by the NDL

Introduction

To search resources, the following four main databases are useful. Each database is different in search target and search method, so it is necessary to choose appropriate database.

We also offer many online services in addition to the databases introduced here.Please refer to the List of Online Services.

 

1. NDL-OPAC

The NDL-OPAC is a database for searching our collection.You can search by information such as title, author and publisher.Some magazines can be searched not only by the title of magazines but also the title of articles. Through this system, you can make reading request in the NDL and you can make a request for copying without visiting the NDL.

2. National Diet Library Digital Collections

The National Diet Library Digital Collections is a database in which you can search and view various digital materials collected and stored by the NDL.  You can search by information such as title and author.  Materials after copyright clearance are available on the Internet.  Materials within the copyright protection period or in process of copyright clearance are divided into two kinds, the one available only within the NDL premises and the other available also in the partner libraries in Japan.  The indexes of all materials are available on the Internet and are searchable .  When you search these digitized materials in the NDL-OPAC, a mark like this is shown in the bibliographic record.

3. NDL Search

The NDL Search is a database in which you can search not only the holding information of our collection but also that of the collections of the prefectural and municipal libraries and various digital data of many other institutions.

*Please notice that the results will show not only the collection of the NDL but also those of other institutions.

4. Research Navi

The Research Navi is a platform of various reference information. Its Japanese website offers the following information:

  • Content information of our collection which is not available in NDL-OPAC, such as information on reference books and table of contents of materials (e.g. titles of music covered in musical scores, encyclopedia entries)
  • Research guide, a kind of pathfinder by topic, written by our staff members based on reference experience

 

The English website offers some English contents to support learning about Japan and Asia.
